Now that we have reached the New Millennium and look forward to celebrate our own Centenary in 2004, I am struck by a curious logic, not untypical of a family owned business, that has brought us where we are today.

My great-grandfather, who founded Ruffs in 1904, fell out with my grandfather with the result that at different times there were outlets in Gosport, Toronto and London. Would they had worked together!

Ruffs Jewellers Estd. 1904My grandfather struggled through the Thirties and the jewellery shop was run side by side an incongruous photographic department. Through the Second World War the business survived, in the absence of stock, on the strength of the workshop, which boasted it could repair anything! The mind boggles.....

My father could have been a career soldier, having survived D-Day, Arnhem and the Second Rhine Crossing as a Glider Pilot. Instead he came back to Gosport from a tour in Palestine with the Parachute Regiment on a quarter of his Army pay and a mountain of clocks and watches to repair!!

Ruffs Jewellers Estd. 1904It was never my intention to enter the family business but, on finishing university, responded to a call to "briefly help out". Two years later I looked around and realised I was hooked.

Today there is no discord, division or the odd department. We all work together to create some of the finest jewellery in the world. Be it a signet ring, a diamond solitaire or a fabulous gem-set bracelet, it has to be the best for our discerning international clientele - with that added extra ingredient of personal service that only a family business can provide.
